For Immediate Release Quinault Joins Suit Re: Genetically Engineered Salmon

TAHOLAH, WA (7/15/16)— For Immediate Release

Quinault Joins Suit Re: Genetically Engineered Salmon

Quinault Indian Nation joined 11 other plaintiffs in filing a suit in US District Court against the US Food and Drug Administration for approving genetically modified salmon, an unnatural animal created by AquaBounty from the genetic material of three fish, Atlantic salmon, Pacific salmon and ocean eel pout. This is the first genetically engineered animal ever approved for sale as food anywhere in the world.
“This is clearly a case of FDA violating its mandate and purpose,” said Fawn Sharp, President of the Quinault Nation and of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians as well as Vice President of the National Congress of American Indians. “It is FDA’s job to assure that the food and drugs people consume in this country are safe for people and the environment. The agency does not have the expertise to make this decision, and it apparently has little knowledge about the environmental impacts of these new genetically engineered animals.”
The FDA approved the GE salmon under its New-Deal-Era authority of the 1930’s to regulate “animal drugs” such as veterinary medicines.“That does not qualify them to sanction entirely new man-made animals as food,” said President Sharp.Genetically engineered salmon that escape containment can harm endangered wild salmon populations by interbreeding or outcompeting for food. Under FDA’s approval, the GE salmon will undertake a journey halfway around the globe to reach a US dinner plate. The company plans to produce the salmon eggs in a lab in Prince of Edward Island, Canada, transport the eggs to Panama to be raised and processed, and then transport the filets to the US for sale. AquaBounty has repeatedly said it intends to grow its GE salmon in the US and other locations around the world, but FDA’s approval only considered the current plans for these far-flung facilities in Canada and Panama, leaving the risk of escape and contamination of US and other salmon runs unstudied. “Although there are obvious risks to our salmon, the Food and Drug Administration surged forward with its approval. The agency didn’t consider treaty rights. It didn’t even involve federal wildlife agencies. It simply did not consider how these man-created animals, engineered to grow twice as big as natural salmon, will affect the fish provided to us by our Creator.
All they heard was very flimsy assurance from AquaBounty that their ‘Frankenfish’ would not escape—something that has been disproved many times,” said President Sharp. In the past decade, GE crops have repeatedly escaped confinement, despite industry and U.S. government assurances that they would not. These escapes have cost U.S. farmers literally billions of dollars in lost markets and sales, to GE-contamination sensitive domestic and export markets. Escape and contamination risks are even greater here, with a highly migratory fish that could threaten some of the last remaining wild salmon on the planet, said President Sharp.Joining Quinault Nation as plaintiffs in the suit are the Institute for Fisheries Resources, the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations, the Golden Gate Salmon Association, Kennebec Reborn, Friends of Merry Meeting Bay, Cascadia Wildlands, the Center for Biological Diversity, Ecology Action Centre, Friends of the Earth, Food and Water Watch and the Center for Food Safety.
The groups are represented by the Center for Food Safety and Earthjustice. Also named as defendents are Sylvia Mathews Burwell, Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Robert M. Califf, M.D., Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

July – 2016

Sekon, Greetings and Peace,

Last summer I found my immune system was severely compromised. I had been exposed to deadly bacteria called CDIFF, which spread throughout my abdomen and affected my entire renal system, which damaged my liver and caused near blindness. I was on life support for 10 days in NY and since February 2016 I have been cared for by the Mayo Clinic in Florida and relatives and loved ones as their schedule would allow. I have battled this condition and endured physical demands I could never have imagined! I have survived because of your prayers and support.

This illness has also taken a great toll on my financial situation in every way. With extensive expenses, travel, food, lodging, car rental, over the counter medications and such has necessitated a serious appeal for financial support. Kindly consider sharing this message to those of you who may know or someone who may be able to help. Every contribution is TAX DEDUCTIBLE. Checks or money orders can be mailed to: Joanne Shenandoah, Box 450, Oneida, NY 13421, or Americu Credit Union, 280 Genesee Street, Oneida, NY 13421.

I could not be where I am now without your individual kindness and generosity. I am asking for you to share far and wide because additional support is needed as we approach the actual transplant. I have every intention of carrying on with my music once I am healed, and in fact have already begun some projects both book form and music as well.

Blessings to you all as we continue on our mission to heal our lovely planet by initiating environmental, spiritual, and physical changes for ourselves while securing happiness and peace for those yet unborn.

As we journey through life we are met with many challenges. Know that my love and joy continues to spread across the planet and I am eternally grateful for the blessings of this life and the wonders which lay beyond. Looking forward to sharing some new songs of hope for you soon.

My plan is to put together a Skype course for those who are interested in learning more about the music profession. An announcement will be made on my website soon. http://www.joanneshenandoah.com

To all of you I extend my appreciation and love. I carry your hopes and prayers in my heart and soul.

In respect to all living beings,

Joanne Shenandoah

A visit with Raven E. Heavy Runner on “Make No Bones About It,”July 3rd, 2016 at 4pm

265621_10150341154947837_6178701_o

Raven E. Heavy Runner, MSW, (Blackfeet) is one of the many Two Spirit voices in the western United States, reclaiming a tradition that European colonization had nearly extinguished among Native Americans.
Homophobia was virtually unknown in Native cultures. Tribal legend and oral history confirm this tradition. So, in fact, do early American ethnographers, who remarked on the unfamiliar freedom of gender expression. However, Christian missionaries certainly disapproved, and spent the better part of 400 years trying to eradicate this freedom along with most other aspects of Native identity.

Raven’s personal journey as a board school attendee, Rural reservation child, Seattle Street Kid, U.S. Army Veteran, LGBTQ activist, and college graduate led him to believe he was something else besides just a gay Indian, and he began truly studying the cultures that he lived in. While getting involved in theatre, he also began learning about being a Two-Spirit.

Two Spirit people tended to be identified early and given roles in society that matched their gifts: teachers, healers, nurses, storytellers, sacred name givers, match makers, ambassadors, or perhaps keepers of sacred knowledge.

Raven’s role has been as a scholar, an ambassador across cultures, and an important voice in Native communities as he helps to restore indigenous values that emphatically do not include homophobia.

Raven is currently social worker with the Muckleshoot Tribe in Washington State, and he continues to be active in the revival of Two Spirit awareness nationwide.

A visit with Tiokasin Ghosthorse on “Make No Bones About It.” June 26, 2016 at 5pm

10275418_415722978606330_2822031050347384998_o

“We have to stop with the idea of creating peace on earth and begin with creating peace with Mother Earth. We’ve tried the first alternative for thousands of years, but look where that has led us, now is the time of the Original Ways, the Native ways, after all … it is coming this way – that we all must make peace with Mother Earth – there is no more altering the native way.”

Tiokasin Ghosthorse is from the Cheyenne River Lakota (Sioux) Nation of South Dakota and the bands of Itazipco/Mnicoujou and Oglala. He is the host of First Voices Indigenous Radio on WBAI NY – Pacifica Radio. Tiokasin has been described as “a spiritual agitator, natural rights organizer, Indigenous thinking process educator and a community activator.” One reviewer called him “a cultural resonator in the key of life.”

Politics for the Lakota is spiritual and is not separate from the rest of life.

Tiokasin has had a long history in Indigenous rights activism and advocacy. He spoke, as a teenager, at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Ever since his UN work, he has been actively educating people who live on Turtle Island (North America) and overseas about the importance of living with each other and with Mother Earth.

He is a survivor of the “Reign of Terror” from 1972 to 1976 on the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Cheyenne River Lakota Reservations, and the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs Boarding and Church Missionary School systems designed to “kill the Indian and save the man.”

Tiokasin Ghosthorse is also a master musician and one of the great exponents of the ancient red cedar Lakota flute, and plays traditional and contemporary music, using both Indigenous and European instruments. He has been a major figure in preserving and reviving the cedar wood flute tradition and has combined “spoken word” and music in performances since childhood. Tiokasin performs worldwide and has been featured at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the United Nations as well as at numerous universities and concert venues.

His words of Indigenous insight and global concern are offered though the experience of “one Lakota living in one world”.
