Chief Arvol Looking Horse is the 19th generation keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe Bundle and holds the responsibility of spiritual leader among the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota People. He holds an honorary Doctorate from the University of South Dakota, and travels and speaks extensively on peace, environmental and native rights issues. He has been the recipient of several awards, including the Wolf Award of Canada for his dedicated work for peace. A skilled horseman, he shares his knowledge with the youth on the long distance rides that take place in South Dakota throughout the year.
Native American spiritual leaders and other indigenous people will gather in the Rogue Valley in a five-day event celebrating the 20th International World Peace and Prayer Day. A ceremony at the Southern Oregon Regional Peace Pole will be held in Medford Wednesday, with the remainder of the events at Howard Prairie Lake Thursday through Sunday.
Among those participating in the Wednesday ceremony at U.S. Cellular Community Park in Medford will be Lakota Chief Arvol Looking Horse, founder of the World Peace and Prayer Day and the 19th-generation keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe Bundle. Pastor John David Gomez, founding member of Medford’s Multicultural Commission will provide a welcome.
Following the ceremony in Medford, the Peace Pole will be moved to Howard Prairie Lake for the remaining days of the event, which will include indigenous elders and spiritual leaders from around the world. The four days of ceremony, workshops and performances are open to the public at no charge at Howard Prairie Lake, 3249 Hyatt Prairie Road, Ashland.
The Ashland nonprofit organization Red Earth Descendants, regional Native American representatives and individuals from Southern Oregon are hosting the event.
Speakers will share traditional teachings, address issues facing the planet and offer solutions. Music, dance and feasting are part of the gathering and all are welcome at a mid-day community meal each day. Camping may be arranged through Jackson County Parks Department by calling 541-774-8183.
World Peace and Prayer Day was founded in 1995 by Chief Looking Horse, and has since been held annually around the world. Chief Looking Horse — who has established relationships with world leaders, including Desmond Tutu, President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama — is recognized as the spiritual leader of the Lakota, Dakota and North Dakota Sioux nations. He will lead the weekend’s ceremonies.
Speakers and guests include Chief Eddie Benton Banai, grand chief of the Three Fires Midewiwin Lodge; Elder Agnes Baker Pilgrim of the Rogue Valley, who is also chairperson for the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers; Roy Hays Jr., the great-great-grandson of Chief Joseph and 7 Drum ceremonial leader; representatives of the Maori Nation; and Rabbi David Zaslow of Ashland.

On this June 21st, 2015 we as the Spiritual People, from the guidance of Great Spirit, will light our sacred fire of 20 years.
My heart is heavy as I share my feelings with each and every one of you; it feels as though humanity has gone too far. It was shown in a dream long ago, that we would come to a time in this global community, we would have to unite at our Sacred Sites once again to bring back healing. Many Nations would stand shoulder to shoulder in the Sacred Hoop. The future of our children’s health and wellbeing is dependent on our efforts. They need every person’s prayer from the Global Community.
We are sincerely asking prayers for the People that are spiritually disconnected who are making decisions that only last in their life time of survival for profit off Mother Earth. Mother Earth is the source of life not a resource. Many Sacred Sites have been abused and controlled by People who do not know Spirit.
In our prophecies when earth and climate change begins to disrupt the natural cycle of survival and life, the animals would warn with their sacred color white. This will be a sign of what is called the Crossroads; either be faced with chaos, disasters and witness tears from our relatives eyes or we can unite spiritually in this Global Community – All Nations, All Faiths, One Prayer.
We must regain the respect and honor back for the Sacred Sites and Sacred Places of worship. Long ago, wars left these places and people of prayer alone, today they are being destroyed. I know that many People feel the same as I do.
This has been a long journey of many tests and hardship at times. If it were not for the People that believed in spirit of the white animals we would have never come this far. We ran and rode horse back carrying that sacred message for the health and well being of Mother Earth and all her creation. We did our best. I would like to acknowledge all those who heard the call and sponsored the event of June 21st to grow on their continent and honor their local Sacred Site.
This year many will travel again to their sacred places. In Ashland, Oregon, we will honor my Hunka (adopted) Father Dave Chief for instructing RED (Red Earth Descendants) to pray since 1996 at their Sacred Site. I ask the Global community to pray with us, whether it is a church, temple, synagogue, mosque or where ever the spirit may guide to pray with us on this day.

World Peace and Prayer Day—also known as, Honoring Sacred Sites Day, was envisioned and brought forth by Chief Looking Horse as a day to join worldwide communities and people of all races, ages, genders, and faiths, who share concern for the welfare of the Earth and humanity. Honoring-ceremonies, invocation and prayer are observed in collaboration with local indigenous representatives. Special guest speakers, wisdom keepers and activists of all denominations share spiritual insight and discuss important environmental concerns and cures—on both a local and global level. This profoundly auspicious time is elevated by a cross-cultural celebration of music, dance, and storytelling.

World Peace & Prayer Days Events
June 20, 21, 22 & 23 – World Peace & Prayer Days. Live Oak Campground. Santa Ynez. The Sacred Fire is the heart of World Peace and Prayer Day. It will be lit on the morning of June 20th and honored over four days, with a special ceremonial emphasis – following traditional Lakota Sioux ways, on Summer Solstice, Friday June 21. As the sacred fire burns there will be a time when everyone is invited to offer tobacco and prayers to the fire. This prayerful Summer Solstice Day will be followed by the sharing of wisdom keepers and speakers, joining us from far and wide. Saturday June 22, the celebrations will continue with Earth and animal awareness activities, talking circles, storytelling, more speakers and shared feasts. All activities and events are offered at no cost to all. This includes camping at the Live Oak Campground on the evenings of June 20, 21 and 22. Shared meals will be provided on Friday and Saturday. Please bring food to cook and share!

June 23 – Honoring Sacred Sites. Acknowledged by all Nations around the world as places holding unique geographical, spiritual, historical and often mythological significance. These places of worship—intended to unite people in peace, can all too easily become a source of power struggle, greed and environmental abuse. It is by no coincidence that places where the Earth vibrates with magnified energy, also commonly align with rich pockets of Earth’s greatest natural resources. Therefore, the importance of protecting sacred sites and educating people about the value of restoring them to balance, reaches beyond the realm of spiritual ideals and directly into the impact their restoration has, on the health of the environment. Chief Looking Horse will be visiting some of the sacred sites of the area on Sunday the 23rd, performing ceremony to cleanse the lands.
Arvol Lookinghorse is a Lakota spiritual leader and 19th generation keeper of the Tradition of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf. (Wakan Chanupa). According to the Wodakota website: “People of the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Sioux Nation believe the White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared to the tribes hundreds of years ago, bringing instruction in sacred ceremonies of how to live in balance with all life, and leaving behind a sacred bundle containing a sacred pipe of peace. She left prophecies about a time in which she would return again. The 1994 birth of a white buffalo calf is believed to have been the sign that these times were now at hand.” Arvol’s story is woven together with the return of the White Buffalo and the healing of the planet. He has travelled around the world with a message of peace and urging people to honour the earth and all of its inhabitants while promoting dialogue among indigenous people.
